Dubai Police revealed to install thousands of CCTV cameras with artificial intelligence software all in Dubai before Expo2020. Cameras will install facial recognition software to identify potential criminals and will able to issue verbal warning to offenders.
"Criminal activity-related cameras will capture footage of people involved in crimes, recognise their faces and analyses the crime,” said Brig Jamal Al Muhairi, deputy director of administrative affairs at Dubai Police. “Of those criminal activity-related cameras, microphones will be connected to cameras to warn criminals. If a person is trying to steal, for example, an audio system will use to tell the thieves that he or she is being watched by policemen.”
The system which is being called"Oyoon" will phased in 2018 and 2019.
The surveillance is necessary to “cope with the challenges of the age” said Maj Gen Khalil Al Mansouri, assistant to the chief of Dubai Police.
It will also be able to recognise humans, cars, traffic violations and different objects. All cameras to be linked to one central command room to respond fast to crimes security breaches and traffic issues.Cameras with licence plate readers will monitor and record reckless driving.
“As the world changes, we need to change. We are approaching Expo 2020 and Dubai will witness a heavy footfall,” he said, adding that tourist destinations would be heavily monitored.
With supervision of Dubai Police all concerned authorities will work together under a combine security system,he added.Dubai Police are reviewing number of cameras installed in each area.
Face recognition cameras will play a major role in reducing crime rate and lawbreaker in vital and residential areas,” said Maj Gen Al Mansouri.
How the System will Work?
Artificial intelligence for video surveillance utilises computer software programmes to analyse images from the cameras to recognise humans, vehicles or objects. It converts the images or videos into data to help the decision maker or the official to respond quickly to crimes or any suspicious situation.
The AI sends an alert if it detects a trespasser breaking the “rule”.
In other scenarios, it can actually prevent a crime by warning potential thieves through an audio system.
Police will have the ability to digitally track movement of a criminal by using face-recognition technology.
It can also help police fine traffic law violators without stopping the violator’s vehicle.
