Jebel Hafeet
Jebel Hafeet or ‘Mountain’ Hafeet is a ‘must-not-miss’ attraction in Al Ain. Located south of the Al Ain city border shared with Oman, a high way has been constructed in 1986 to reach this place. It is around 1250m high and the drive up the majestic rocky mountain on its winding roads is certainly worth a trip. There are several parking lots along the way which provide ample viewing opportunities and beautiful backdrops for photo shoots. Right at the top are viewing platforms where you can spend time gazing down at Oasis city and also a café where you can have some quick refreshments. The beauty of Al Ain city is enjoyed best from the top. At around 915m height is Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet Hotel, well known for their views and recreation facilities.
Per official sources, Jebel Hafeet is also a source of fossil finds which provide proof of ancient life-forms. The discovery of calcified corals establishes that the region was once covered by the sea. Jebel Hafit is the home of several species plants, animals and birds, such as Arabian Tahr.
It could get cooler at the top, so it might be a good idea to take your jacket along. During the winter months, afternoons are a better time to visit, when it is neither too cold nor hot, and you can bet on a clearer view than otherwise. During summer, evening will probably be a better choice.
Jebel Hafeet also offers stunning visuals at night, from the city. With the lights switched on along the twisting roads, the mountain comes alive and alight and looks like a shimmering lamp in the distance.
Green Mubazzarah
This green expanse at the foot of Jebel Hafeet is another spectacle which will leave you amazed at how Mother Nature has blessed Al Ain. This place is a perfect spot for picnics and family outings and during ideal weather conditions, the place is thronged with families out to enjoy the sun. A popular sight is adventurists who aim to trek up the mountain and pitch tents at the base. In addition to special attractions such as mini train for children and thermal baths, there are also outdoor hot water springs which can be enjoyed by the general public. Also available is the facility to rent chalets at Green Mubazzarah which are sure to provide you with a wonderful stay experience. It is possible to spend quite an enjoyable time at Green Mubazzarah and can be ranked a top attraction in Al Ain.
Al Ain Zoo
As the website of Al Ain Zoo states, "the late Sheikh Zayed established this unique zoo in the Middle East (in 1968) with the vision of creating natural habitats for animals to live freely". To remain true to this vision and to further care for the wildlife of the region, Al Ain Zoo has instituted many conservation and breeding programs. There are over 4000 animals in this zoo, housed in special sections including enclosures such as bird house, reptile house. This is a wonderful destination for families with members of all ages and the special experiences including giraffe feeding, bird show and others provide a special feast for the visitors. Al Ain Zoo makes a special effort to offer educationally focused programs and encourage school visits. An expansion project is on the agenda to develop into Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort, to create a world class recreational experience and ‘to transform the area of the existing zoo into a new institution dedicated to exhibiting and conserving the wildlife of the desert world’. A day out to Al Ain Zoo can be considered a day well spent and will prove an enjoyable and a learning experience.
