An accompanying picture shows his right hand, with which he usually plays his guitar, in a plaster cast and his other arm in a sling.
His friend, Kent 'Smallzy' Small, tweeted: 'Sources in LDN @edsheeran telling me he's been hit by a car while riding a bike. Sending healing vibes.'
Sheeran is due to fly to Asia this week ahead of a tour of the continent, but his injury could throw those concerts into doubt.
Fans in Taipei face an anxious wait to find out whether he will play a scheduled gig at the city's Nangang Exhibition Hall on Sunday night.
The 26-year-old is then down to play at Jo Hall in Osaka and Seoul's Olympic Park next week.
They are the first of 15 Asia tour dates which are due to see him play in Tokyo, Manila and Singapore between now and November 23.
Sheeran's management team have been contacted for comment.
Sheeran posted as recently as three days ago on Instagram, when he posed with a beer on Friday night.
Worried fans have wished him well as he waits to find out whether the tour can go ahead as planned.
Justine Rebecca wrote online: 'Wishing @EdSheeran a speedy recovery... imagine being the person who ran over Ed Sheeran tho poor Ed and his bike.'
Other fans joked that the British popstar had 'done a Bono', a reference to the U2 singer's accident in New York in 2014.
Following that crash, Bono required surgery and was unable to play guitar for around six months after swerving to avoid another cyclist.
