The update by Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, means that from 1st July, expats have to renew their driving licences every five years.
Prior to this it was every 10 years. No word yet on whether charge for renewal will increase – that’s AED 120, plus AED 150 for an eye test.
Amendents were first introduced in April and we now know it won’t be applied retrospectively, as Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA Licensing Agency, explains: “The Ministerial Resolution, which will be implemented as of July 1st this year, sets…the initial validity of driver licences issued or replaced, as two years for citizens, GCC nationals and other nationalities aged 21 years and above.
“It sets the validity of renewal of driver licenses as 10 years for citizens and GCC nationals aged 21 years and above, and five years in respect of other nationalities of the same age group. ”
Under the new law, which amends legislation going back to 1995, motorists are not allowed to drive a motorbike without proper license and permit. The same goes for electric scooters, tricycles and quad bikes.
The law also emphasised that electric scooters or and quads are for entertainment purposes and only allowed in the the desert – with proper licensing.
Driving licences can be renewed via RTA apps, self-service Smart Kiosks at www.rta.ae or at approved testing centres.
